Talking Points!!!

Web Page Response time

Recent report by Akamai and Jupiter Research says that ‘4 Seconds’ is the New Threshold of Acceptability for Retail Web Page Response.

Is this something new? Not really. What has changed is the “patience” level of browsers. With better net connections no one is willing to wait!

The real challenge for site designers would be to reduce the page sizes and to improve the rendering to display the action points first. See this article on webresponse time. The tips still hold true.

This would also mean increased usage of Web 2.0 stuff. For example, more widgets based on technologies like AJAX. So, instead of refreshing the page, we refresh just the required information element.

Second Life Gaining Popularity

Article on Bizreport says Second Life Is Gaining Popularity with Professionals as a Marketing Tool. Is it a global?

I have logged on to SL couple of times but… based in India I can not experience it!!! To listen to audio, see streaming video SL recommends 700 odd kpbs connect speed. Maan, you must be joking, I consider myself lucky if I am able to connect at 128 kpbs!

Seems it is going to be a long wait :-(

News and Crowdsourcing

Today is the day for “future of…”. Wired has a news item on crowdsourcing. Wired News: Gannett to Crowdsource News.

What will newspapers of future be like? Will they go the same way as apparel firms? Outsource news sourcing and focus on branding and demand creation?

One thing, which newspapers will have to focus on is “credibility”. While news sourcing can be outsourced, validating and verifying the news item will still remain the core job of the newspaper – and an integral part of their brand.

Future of Blogs

“Where will blogs be in 10 years?”. Torill says “Somewhere we never anticipated, but where ever it is, it will involve more media than writing.” and has used comments from Adrian. And then I read “Web Site or Blog Site” by Mike on his Conversations Blog.

There is a connection between the posts. In future, it will not matter whether it is blog, web site, discussion forum, audio or video. What will matter is information (content) and the way it is accessed (devices/context). Mash ups are an example. The original content is presented in a different format, in a different context. The mash up defines the user experience. Visit Programmable web for a list of mash ups.

As technology advances, how information is accessed and how we interact with information will also change. See Nokia N Series – Nokia positions N95 as Nokia N95 Multimedia Computer. With these kind of mobile phones around, Torill is definitely right “So, in about five years we’ll have moved on, finally. And video will be as text is now. Linked, linkable, and we’ll ‘write’ video inside the space of the network.”

Finally, the social context will matter. Whatever be the technology, the format of presenting or accessing information – they all will be the result of the “innate” desire of human beings to communicate. And how the role of communication changes will define what will be the future of blogs. Imagine your great great grandfather’s response to – I am blogging because I am feeling lonely. “What is family for?”
